Predicting College Football's Top 10 Running Backs in 2016 Season

1. Leonard Fournette, LSU

Jonathan Bachman/Associated Press

Two opponents stopped Fournette in 2015: rain and Alabama.

Nevertheless, he amassed 1,953 yards and 22 touchdowns on the ground, despite the regular-season opener with McNeese State getting cancelled. Excluding the 19-carry, 31-yard disappointment against the Tide, Fournette averaged a stunning 174.7 during the other 11 games.

LSU needs an improved passing attack to win the SEC, but the offense will ride Fournette as long as possible—just like it should.

He's a generational talent for the program and a leading contender to win the rushing title, especially if the weather cooperates. As for Alabama, well, that's a different story.

Auburn running back Roc Thomas is transferring

Roc Thomas will not be playing for the Auburn Tigers this fall.

Head coach Gus Malzahn announced the junior running back's transfer Tuesday afternoon.

"Roc Thomas has asked for his release from Auburn and I have granted his request," Malzahn said, according to a university press release. "We wish him nothing but the best moving forward."

The 5-foot-10, 203-pounder is a former five-star prospect from Oxford who had yet to break out as a star in Auburn's backfield. The coaching staff stated numerous times this spring Thomas was in the mix for the starting running back job, though rising senior Jovon Robinson is considered the favorite.

Rumblings of Thomas' departure swirled last December while the Tigers were preparing for the Birmingham Bowl against Memphis as Thomas posted cryptic messages on his Twitter and Instagram accounts. Malzahn shot down the speculation by calling the rumors "completely false."

Rumors intensified last week as various reports began to emerge that Thomas was eyeing a transfer. He took to Instagram Thursday and shared a photo of himself in his Auburn uniform with the message "I love it, I swear I do."

The Tigers had hoped to take advantage of Thomas' versatility this spring by working him at both running back and wide receiver.

"Roc's a guy that had a good spring," Auburn offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee told earlier this month in Brentwood, Tennessee. "He's a guy we're going to try to be more versatile with. We think he's a weapon. He's got great hands. He's probably got as good of hands as anyone we have on our team. He can obviously run the football. We're going to try to make him a very versatile playmaker. We'll see how that goes."

Thomas earned the starting job for Auburn's season opener against Louisville last fall, but went down with an injury in the second quarter. He was hampered by more injuries throughout the season and logged 261 rushing yards and one touchdown on 43 carries with 11 catches for 200 yards and another score in 12 appearances.

He appeared in 12 games as a true freshman at Auburn in 2014 and started against Georgia and Alabama. He rushed 43 times for 214 yards and two touchdowns while adding six catches for 27 yards.

After rushing for 2,211 yards and 32 touchdowns in his senior season at Oxford in 2013, Thomas was named "Mr. Football" by the Alabama Sports Writers Association.

Thomas becomes the 12th player with eligibility remaining to leave Auburn's football program this offseason. Check out the other 11 in's slideshow below.

8 Ways Your Running Shoes Are Ruining Your Workout

When it comes to running shoes, we're all special snowflakes. So some sneakers that work great for others may not fit you the same way, says Budd Coates, M.S., director of training at Runner's World and author of Running on Air.

For instance, Brooks, Saucony, New Balance, and other brands each use a different last, the underlying shape around which the shoe's built, Gaudette says.

Some are wider in the heel and narrower in the toe box, or vice versa; others are roomier from top to bottom for people with thicker feet. Others may have less of a drop, or slope, from heel to forefront.

Related: The Best Running Shoes For Men

The brands then produces different models, each designed to correct different minor imperfections in your stride. Finding the right pair for you means honing in on the best combo for your foot shape and biomechanics—something it's tough to do on your own, Gaudette says.

Fix it: Instead of grilling your hard-core running friends for shoe picks, ask where they buy theirs—and head there for consultation.

Running specialty stores train their staff to assess your feet and gait, then bring you a selection of appropriate trainers, Coates says.

Take at least a few options for a spin around the block or on the treadmill and choose the pair that feels most comfortable.

Another perk of heading to a running store? If a couple weeks pass and you find yourself in pain, you can take the shoes back. Chances are, this type of store will make an exchange, Coates says.

Running or cycling? Run, say researchers, for better bones

Exercises, such as running, that put bones to greater use, improve their health better than those (like cycling) that do not exert so much strain on them, finds a new research.

"Normal human beings need to exercise moderately to maintain health. However, those at risk of weaker bones need to take up running rather than swimming or cycling," said lead author Giovanni Lombardi from Istituto Ortopedico Galeazzi in Italy.

The researchers measured glucagon, leptin and insulin — hormones involved in regulating metabolism — as well as levels of osteocalcin and P1NP (proteins associated with bone formation) in 17 trained runners before and after a 65-km mountain ultramarathon run.

Read: Running for beginners: Top 10 tips to get you going

They compared it to the hormones and bone constituents of twelve adults of the same age who did not run the race but did low to moderate physical exercise.

Increasing glucagon levels indicate an energy demand, whilst increasing insulin and leptin levels indicate adequate or excessive energy levels, the researchers stated.

The findings showed that the ultramarathon runners had higher levels of glucagon and lower levels of leptin and insulin when finishing the race as compared to the control group.

The falling levels of insulin ultramarathon runners lead to similarly falling levels of both osteocalcin and P1NP — suggesting that athletes may be diverting energy from bone formation to power the high-energy demands of their metabolism.

However, the runners also had higher P1NP levels at rest compared to controls, suggesting that they may divert energy from bones during racing but also have a net gain in bone health in the long-term.

Read: Lazy bones, move out and cycle: Air pollution won't affect you as much

Running exerts a higher physical load on bone than swimming or cycling, it could be that these forces stimulate bone tissue to signal to the pancreas to help meet its energy needs in the long-term, the researchers explained.

"Our work has shown that bones aren't just lying idle, but are actively communicating with other organs and tissues to drive the body's energy needs," Lombardi said.

The results of the study were presented at the 2016 European Congress of Endocrinology in Munich, Germany.

Donald Trump should pick Ivanka as his running mate

As a service to you, the reader, a surprisingly convincing argument that you may find useful to impress your friends at Memorial Day barbecues.

At some point, Donald Trump needs to designate the person who will serve as his second-in-command should he win the presidency this November. Predicting the person who will be tapped to serve as a candidate's vice president is always a tricky affair, thanks to the general opacity of the decision-making process. For Trump, there's an added layer of obscurity; the simple unpredictability of the guy coats the whole thing with another layer of thick black paint.

So who's it going to be? He's mentioned looking for someone with experience on Capitol Hill, and he and his staff have had a sort of muddled presentation on the merits of choosing a demographically friendly subordinate. Which seems quite possibly to be the role his pick will play: The manager of the restaurant, dealing with the quixotic owner. Perhaps that's ungenerous, but his new current No. 2, Paul Manafort, told the Huffington Post that the VP would "do the part of the job [Trump] doesn't want to do."

With that in mind, allow us to propose the person who I believe would be Trump's best VP choice both politically and personally: His daughter, Ivanka Trump.

Let's dismiss the obstacles at the outset. Ivanka is currently 34 years old, below the 35-year-old threshold demanded by the Constitution. The good news is that her birthday is Oct. 30 — just about a week before Election Day.

A bigger stumbling block is that both Ivanka and Donald share the same home state. Fans of the 2000 election may remember concerns over George W. Bush and Dick Cheney both hailing from Texas, in apparent contradiction of the 12th Amendment's prohibition against both candidates being from the same state. It ended up not being important, thanks to a court's decision that December that Cheney was a resident of Wyoming.

But the amendment's criteria are also often misunderstood. What the amendment says is that members of the Electoral College "shall meet in their respective states and vote by ballot for President and Vice-President, one of whom, at least, shall not be an inhabitant of the same state with themselves." So it's not that the candidates can't both be from the same state; it's that the electors from that state can't vote for both, as Politifact noted last year. That adds a hurdle to a Trump-Trump candidacy, but not an insurmountable one. It means that Trump needs to win the presidency by at least 32 electoral votes (one more than the number from New York state) in order to serve with his daughter. (If this rabbit hole isn't deep enough, here's what might happen next.) But, as Ken Fowler pointed out on Twitter, that's only if Trump won New York — which seems unlikely.

Why even risk it? Because Ivanka brings so much to the table.

She is a woman. I am a skeptic about the idea that women who plan to vote for Hillary Clinton might be tempted by Trump simply because he picks a woman as his running mate. John McCain gave that a shot eight years ago, and it was not a success. But Trump's problems with women far exceed McCain's, and having a constant reminder that he has strong, smart women in his life probably isn't the worst idea.

She knows how to work with Donald Trump. Of all of the considerations that seem critical in a Trump vice president, the ability to deal with the quixotic candidate seems pretty near the top of the list. Chris Christie's given it a go and stuck with it even after being curtly dismissed at one event, and told not to eat cookies at another. But Ivanka's been putting up with his shtick for 35 years (in October) and been successful at it.

She is a good campaign surrogate. We could probably modify this by saying that Ivanka isn't a bad surrogate; after all, her recent assurance that her father was "not a groper" probably wasn't super helpful. Compared to other Trump surrogates, though — Ben Carson, for example — she's hitting at a remarkably good batting average. This is almost certainly a function of having been around her father long enough to have a very good innate sense of his boundaries, and of how to present his will to the world.

She seems like a capable negotiator. Granted, I'm flying a little blind here, but Ivanka has, by all obvious measures, been able to carve her own path to success in the business world. Being born a Trump was more of a kickstarter for her than even for her father, but her personal empire stands on its own feet.

When Trump says he wants someone that knows Capitol Hill, he probably means two things. One is that he wants someone who won't get out-maneuvered on the picayune rules and systems that it takes to get anything done in Congress. Ivanka can't do that. What she almost certainly can do is the other thing: She can wrangle and cajole members of Congress, build relationships and serve as an ambassador for her father.

Would someone who knows members of the House and Senate have an advantage in this regard? Perhaps, but perhaps not. No one seems particularly able to move much on Capitol Hill these days, and I would propose that a celebrity who is new to the scene might have better luck cracking open doors — at least for a little while. I mean, Alex Rodriguez showed up on Capitol Hill and people actually met with him. If a celebrity that toxic can make a dent in things, imagine what someone with actual charm and talent could do. (Editor's note: Philip is a Mets fan.)

It's good branding. One of the things that has been running through my head as we consider who might be Trump's running mate is the idea that Trump might someday soon have to share his campaign signs with another person's name. When insiders were bubbling over the idea of Sen. Bob Corker, I found it very hard to envision "Trump-Corker" t-shirts sweeping the country.

Well, how about: "Trump-Trump"? Or, more simply: "Trump."

The only words that Donald Trump likes to see next to his last name are the names of products he wants to sell: towers, steaks, water. He'd probably settle for following "Trump" with another "Trump."

Choosing Ivanka would allow Trump to create a sort of hereditary system for the presidency. Our founding fathers went to great lengths to create the most-democratic and least-monarchical system of government they could think of. Every four years, a new election and possibly a new president. None of this hereditary transfer of power nonsense. Well, bad news, Mssrs. Madison and Jefferson. Somebody may have just found a loophole.

The beauty of this entire thing is that, for once, it's not totally outside the realm of possibility. I approached this exercise as more of a thought experiment than a real effort at advocacy, but as I was exploring it, realized that ... it's not actually all that crazy. Especially given that the person making the decision somehow manages to intersperse completely rational decisions with utterly incomprehensible ones within the span of a few minutes. Donald Trump — who has even mentioned choosing his daughter as his running mate in the past — is as likely to pick Ivanka as he is Mitt Romney, Bob Corker, Shaquille O'Neal or the skeleton of Betsy Ross.

The case has been made. Now we wait.

Rookie Alexander Rossi Wins The 100th Running Of The Indianapolis 500

INDIANAPOLIS (Reuters) - Rookie Alexander Rossi rolled the dice on fuel and hit the jackpot winning the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, as IndyCar racing ushered in a new era with an American winner.

Rossi, who moved to IndyCar only this year after losing his seat with Formula One tailenders Manor Racing, found himself on top of the motorsports world after squeezing just enough fuel out of his Andretti Autosport Honda to win what is billed as the 'Greatest Spectacle in Racing'.

USA Today Sports / Reuters

IndyCar Series driver Alexander Rossi celebrates after winning the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500.

The 24-year-old American, who had competed in just one oval race and had never raced at the Brickyard until this month, coasted across the finish line more than four seconds ahead of Andretti team mate Colombian Carlos Munoz, with American Josef Newgarden third.

Competing in just his sixth IndyCar race, Rossi had never led a lap until Sunday, his best finish a 10th at a road race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway earlier in the month.

It marked the first win by a rookie since Juan Pablo Montoya in 2000.

"It won't sink in for a while. I don't want it to," Rossi told reporters. "I was sputtering out of turn four for sure.

"The emotional rollercoaster of this race is ridiculous.

"There were moments where I was stoked, moments where I were heartbroken, moments where I was stoked again. I need to see a psychiatrist after this."

USA Today Sports / Reuters

Rossi's victory was the first win by a rookie since Juan Pablo Montoya in 2000.

While the leaders dived into the pits with just under 10 laps left, Rossi and team owner Michael Andretti gambled he had enough fuel to make it to the end and moved into the lead.

It set up a nail-biting finish to the milestone 500 as Rossi nursed his car to the checkered flag and then glided to a stop and was towed into Victory Lane where he received the traditional quart of milk.

"I have no idea how we pulled that off," offered a disbelieving Rossi, as he climbed out of his car. "I just can't believe we've done this.

"I'm just so thankful to do this on the 100th running.

"I cherish the fact at one point we were 33rd. We rolled the dice and came through and made it happen."

It was the victory many of the 400,000 motor racing fans had come to see.

USA Today Sports / Reuters

Rossi found himself on top of the motorsports world after squeezing just enough fuel out of his Andretti Autosport Honda to win the Indy 500.

The sunkissed sellout crowd, most of whom had arrived long before sunrise, stood and cheered through the final tense laps before erupting in wild celebration that rolled like thunder across the sprawling 2.5 mile (4.0 km) oval.

For much of the race it had appeared another driver in the Andretti stable, 2014 winner Ryan Hunter-Reay, was headed back to Victory Lane running up front most of the day.

Late in the race Hunter-Reay and yet another Andretti team mate Townsend Bell were the two fastest cars on the track when Mikhail Aleshin spun into a wall, a crash that brought out the yellow flag and triggered a stampede into the pits.

In a rush to get back out in front, Bell and Hunter-Reay came together leaving both cars pointed nose first into the pit wall with minor damage, re-entering the race a lap down.

Out of the chaos Rossi emerged as a threat to steal a victory and seized his opportunity giving Michael Andretti his fourth Indy 500 victory and second in three years as an owner after failing to win the race as a driver in 16 attempts.

"He honestly had no idea," said Andretti. "He never even saw an oval except for Phoenix before this. Impressive. Really impressive.

"I saw that he was very confident going into the race. I'm like, Hmm, 'who knows, we'll see'.

"He did a hell of a job. Kept his composure the whole race. Even when there were some problems, he still kept his head in the game.

"I'm not surprised, but it's still amazing to be a rookie and to win this race."

Running may be better than cycling for long-term bone health

Exercise that puts greater strain on bones, like running, may improve long-term bone health more effectively than non weight-bearing activities like cycling, conclude the authors of a new study measuring the hormones of mountain ultra-marathon runners. The results of the study are presented today at the European Congress of Endocrinology.

Previous research from the Istituto Ortopedico Galeazzi in Milan found that cyclists racing in ultra-endurance conditions suffered chronic bone resorption -- where calcium from bone is released into the blood stream, weakening bones. In this study, the same group set to find out whether a similar group of elite athletes -- mountain ultra-marathon runners -- had the same response.

The researchers measured two vital bone constituents as well as hormones associated with energy regulation. Osteocalcin and P1NP are two proteins associated with bone formation and their levels in blood are an indicator of bone health. Glucagon, leptin and insulin are hormones involved in regulating metabolism and indicate the body's energy needs. Increasing glucagon levels indicate an energy demand, whilst increasing insulin and leptin levels indicate adequate or excessive energy levels. The researchers measured these three hormones as well as levels of osteocalcin and P1NP in 17 trained runners before and after a 65-km mountain ultramarathon run and compared it to the hormones and bone constituents of twelve adults of the same age who didn't run the race but did low to moderate physical exercise.

Compared to the control group, ultramarathon runners had higher levels of glucagon and lower levels of leptin and insulin when finishing the race. The falling levels of insulin within this group were linked to similarly falling levels of both osteocalcin and P1NP -- suggesting that athletes may be diverting energy from bone formation to power the high-energy demands of their metabolism. However, ultramarathon runners had higher P1NP levels at rest compared to controls, suggesting that they may divert energy from bones during racing but have a net gain in bone health in the long-term.

"The every-day man and woman need to exercise moderately to maintain health," said Dr Giovanni Lombardi, lead author of the study. "However, our findings suggest that those at risk of weaker bones might want to take up running rather than swimming or cycling."

One theory that could explain the effect of different exercises on bone formation is the role of osteocalcin, explains Dr Lombardi. "Previous studies have shown that osteocalcin communicates with beta cells in the pancreas, which regulate the body's glucose metabolism," he said. "Because running exerts a higher physical load on bone than swimming or cycling, it could be that these forces stimulate bone tissue to signal to the pancreas to help meet its energy needs in the long-term."

"Our work has shown that bones aren't just lying idle, but are actively communicating with other organs and tissues to drive the body's energy needs," said Dr Lombardi. "We often find that metabolic conditions and fracture risks are linked to the same underlying condition, so the more we learn about the interaction between bones and body metabolism, the better we will understand complex but important diseases such as diabetes and osteoporosis."

Denver Broncos' Full Position Breakdown and Depth Chart Analysis at Running Back

The Denver Broncos are going to have a different look on offense this year, but it's one that is going to be familiar to Broncos fans. Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak didn't get to fully implement his offense last year with quarterback Peyton Manning running the show. Instead, the Broncos used a hybrid system that was part Kubiak and part Manning.

This year, the real Kubiak system will be in place for the Broncos.

Earlier this offseason, the Broncos decided to match the Miami Dolphins' offer for restricted-free-agent running back C.J. Anderson. He stays with the team with a larger bank account and a larger role than ever before.

Anderson has intriguing upside as the team's starter. After two years of being among the league's leaders in all-purpose yards over the final two months of the regular season, Anderson needs to show that he can produce for a full season.

Behind Anderson, the Broncos have an interesting competition at the position. There is a mixture of veterans, practice-squad-level players and one talented rookie all vying to create a pecking order of backup running backs.

Here is the full position breakdown and depth chart analysis of the running backs on the Broncos roster.

Starter: C.J. Anderson

The Broncos picked up Anderson as an undrafted free agent after the 2013 NFL draft. This was the same draft where they selected Wisconsin running back Montee Ball in the second round. There were 22 backs selected in that draft class, and that's the reason why Anderson wears the No. 22 for the Broncos. While Ball is out of the league, Anderson is a Super Bowl champion.

Anderson is a powerful back who can lead the way for the Broncos. He finished 2015 ranked fourth in rush-yards-after-contact average (2.22 yards). He doesn't need a ton of space to work with, and it doesn't take Anderson long to build up power between the tackles.

Even though he's not known for his speed, Anderson is more agile than some think. He's capable of making defenders miss in tight quarters and can change speed quickly without losing much speed. He led the NFL in rushing yards during the postseason, and in each playoff game Anderson had a carry of 30 yards or more.

This year in the true Kubiak system, Anderson could have sustained success as the team's starter. Anderson smiled as he said, "This system is perfect for me."

He's excited to stay in Denver, and Anderson is more than ready to prove the doubters wrong. Anderson has heard people proclaim he can't produce for a whole season, and he's heard national media members and NFL analysts proclaim he's not even the best back on the roster.

The naysayers only energize the veteran back. He's shown up to OTAs this offseason in the best shape of his life. Gone are the days of him "ramping up" toward the regular season, Anderson is ready to go right now.

The Broncos worked diligently to upgrade their offensive line this offseason. Adding offensive tackles Russell Okung and Donald Stephenson should do just that. With a better blocking scheme up front and a quarterback that is able to draw away the back-side defender, Anderson should see better rushing lanes and clear cutback lanes in front of him in 2016.

Primary Backup: Devontae Booker

The team found a tremendous value in the 2016 NFL draft when Utah running back Devontae Booker fell to them in the fourth round. A meniscus injury that required two surgeries is part of the reason why Booker fell in the draft.

Booker does a lot of things similar to the way that Anderson does.

Like Anderson, Booker is a powerful runner between the tackles. He's not afraid to run inside, and Booker rarely goes down on first contact. He has the ability to wear down a defense and get stronger as the game goes on.

The rookie may have been the best receiving back in this draft class. Over the last two years, Booker snared 80 passes for the Utes. He will naturally look passes into his hands and can make defenders miss after the catch.

Pass-protection ability is an important asset for any rookie running back, and Booker is no different. He'll have to prove that he can protect the passer if he wants to win the primary backup job behind Anderson.

Booker got everyone talking with some interesting comments from the NFLPA rookie symposium earlier this month, per the league's official Twitter account:

Anderson is not bothered by the rookie's comments.

"To be honest, him carrying pads or him not carrying pads, it doesn't matter as long as he comes to work," Anderson said. "If he comes to work, he'll get the respect."

Some think Booker is going to cut into Anderson's playing time, but that may not be the case. The language of the NFL is money, and Anderson's $5 million bonus paid earlier this year says the team will give him as much as he can possibly handle. Think of Booker as more of a three-down-back-in-waiting for the Broncos.

Competition for Final Spots: Juwan Thompson, Kapri Bibbs, Ronnie Hillman

There is going to be a numbers crunch at certain positions when the Broncos are making up their 53-man roster. One of those positions that could get squeezed is running back.

Not only will the number of tight ends kept on the final roster impact how many backs are retained, but the Broncos may actually have a fullback (2016 sixth-round pick Andy Janovich) take up a valuable roster spot in 2016. The addition of a fullback may mean the Broncos only keep three running backs, and at most they would likely only keep four running backs.

At the top of the list could be veteran Ronnie Hillman. He was an unrestricted free agent this offseason, but he didn't generate much (if any) interest on the open market. The Broncos decided to bring back their leading rusher from 2015 on a one-year deal where he carries a $2 million cap hit with $500,000 in dead money.

Next up is power back Juwan Thompson. He's not creative as a runner, but he is swift when he builds a head of steam and tough to bring down. Thompson is a favorite of the coaching staff—both at the running back position and on special teams. This offseason, Thompson has been getting snaps in practice at both running back and fullback.

A sleeper at the position could be Kapri Bibbs. Undrafted out of Colorado State in 2014, Bibbs has spent two years on the Broncos practice squad. He's a natural runner with a proven nose for the end zone. In practice, Bibbs has shown good hands as a receiver out of the backfield. This offseason, Bibbs has shown up with a stronger physique than in previous years.

Offensive coordinator Rick Dennison is excited about Bibbs' potential.

"I think we've always thought he has some great run skills. He's pretty natural with the ball. He caught the ball well. It's just figuring the whole thing out." Dennison concluded, "He just looks like he knows what's going on a little bit better."

Behind Bibbs there is veteran Cyrus Gray. He's a decent all-purpose back, but Gray has to be considered a long shot for the 53-man roster.

In 2015, the Broncos were undefeated when they gave Anderson 14 or more carries. In 2016, we may see Anderson get an average between 20 and 25 carries per game. This heavy workload was previewed last year in Super Bowl 50 when Anderson had 24 carries for 90 yards and a touchdown against a tough Carolina Panthers defense.

In that game, Anderson was given the freedom to control his workload. As he continued to hammer on the Panthers defense, Anderson would sometimes look over to the sidelines and give the coaching staff a "thumbs up" to show he wanted to stay in. Anderson did stay in for most of the game, only allowing Hillman to get on the field for five carries.

Expect Anderson to keep giving the "thumbs up" in 2016.

Their main backup running back should be Booker, as he does things like Anderson does. So long as the rookie proves that he can protect the quarterback, a primary reserve role should be there for him.

Bibbs has a new look, but like Booker, he needs to prove himself in pass protection. If Bibbs struggles in that area of his game (again), then the team could easily turn to Thompson.

Being able to line up at both running back and fullback is a great benefit for Thompson, and so is his outstanding ability on special teams.

Hillman is different from any back on the roster at this time, and he's proved that he can make big plays with a tiny crease. However, he's not a lock to make the final roster due to the competition he'll be facing.

The Broncos are built to win on defense. In order to better set up their defense by keeping them fresh, the Broncos will lean heavily on the rushing attack in 2016. That means a lot of Anderson—just like in the Super Bowl. The Kubiak system is capable of creating an incredibly strong rushing attack, and that should once again be the case this season.

Running Doc on PCL injuries: Don't get rushed into surgery!

Dear Running Doc,

I am a 43-year-old man living on Staten Island who runs 23 miles a week and competes in 3 marathons a year. I rarely if ever get injured but when I do your book is always helpful. Unfortunately, this injury is not in the book! I injured my left knee yesterday while falling while it was bent. There was pain and swelling immediately and I went straight to my Orthopedic Surgeon who after examining me, taking X-rays and doing an MRI declared I have a posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) tear. He says I need surgery. What do you think?

Joseph T. Staten Island, NY

Thank you for writing Joseph. The reason PCL was not included in the first addition of my book is because PCL injuries rarely occur to runners while running or falling. The therapy and treatment however may impact a runner's running from 6 to 12 months. It is for that reason that I am writing today and will be including it in the next addition of my more comprehensive book. Dr. Charles Peterson MD published in February of 2014 as a member of the consulting staff of Arizona Sports Medicine Center, Mayo Clinic, Phoenix, that this injury was rare and reported a 3.5% - 20% of all knee injuries. The higher incidences were associated with other injuries of the knee at the same time and the lower incidences were associated with insolated injuries of the PCL.

The PCL is similar to the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) although thicker and stronger than the ACL. It connects the femur to the shin bone. The most common sports that sports doctors see these injuries in are football, skiing, soccer and baseball.

When seeing the patient, the patient will report swelling, pain, difficulty bearing weight and a wobbly unstable feeling when trying to walk on it.

The doctor will examine you while you lie on your back with your knees bent. He/she will press on the upper shin and abnormal movement of the shin backward indicates PCL tear. An X-ray (which may show small fragments of bone pulled off when the tear occurred) and an MRI are necessary to complete the exact diagnosis.

There are many Grades of tear. Low Grades may be partial tears of different sizes and higher Grades may be full tears and even include other structures within the knee. Only Grade 4 need surgery and those usually include other knee structures.

In most cases that I have seen, that are isolated PCL tears (including full thickness tears) have not required surgery and have done well with physical therapy and get back to sport within three months. Those that remain feeling unstable need to go to surgery. I have known pro football middle linebackers who have played their entire career without a PCL. I have also known a Pro Bowl tight end that felt he needed a reconstruction in order to maintain his edge.

Therefore Joseph, it's great that you wrote. Be sure you are not being rushed to surgery. Please let us know how you are doing.

Enjoy the Ride!

Highlights from the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500

Verizon Indy Car driver Ryan Hunter-Reay (28) beats James Hinchcliffe (5) out of the pits for the start of the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Flukes don't win the Indianapolis 500. Everyone wants to be part of the show, and every driver wants to win this race. That's why none of the leaders did it. When you have fast cars, you know you got cars to win, you got to go flat-out and you got try to win the thing as you should, without trying to play the fuel game.

Rossi put off a final pit stop, passing leaders who stopped to refuel. He also gave Honda its first victory since Hunter-Reay won. Montoya climbed out of his wrecked vehicle and waved to some of the fans crowding along the fence, then climbed into an ambulance for the kind of ride nobody likes to take at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

"I have no idea how we pulled that off. We ran out in Turn 4 (at the end) and we were clutching it and coasting down the back straight", Rossi said. I'll cherish the fact that at one point we were 33rd and that we rolled the dice and we came through and we made it happen.

"I'm just sad and really disappointed", said Munoz, a 24-year-old Colombian. "I was like, 'Wow, ' I'll need to see a psychiatrist after this'".

Rossi stretched his fuel 90 miles, further than anyone had gone all afternoon. - Carlos Munoz, who finished second. What can I say?

Munoz has contended at Indy before and he's proven to be fast at the speedway.

So Rossi went past the white flag with a big lead, while 350,000 spectators-not to mention several drivers pursuing him-waited to see if he really, truly had 2-1/2 miles left.

The American, who was in the running for a seat at Manor this season, became just the ninth rookie to win the Indy 500 in what was only his sixth Indy race. (Rossi went off as a 60-to-1 longshot.) And yet, there stood Rossi in Victory Lane trying to grasp all that transpired.

"Man, it was so close at the end", added Herta, Rossi's race strategist.

That's not to take anything away from Rossi and Andretti Herta Autosport, because they certainly had at least a top-10 auto but were on no one's radar nearing the finish.

Instead, Marco Andretti never contended on a day his four teammates were clearly among the best in the field.

Ryan Hunter-Reay looked to be in control of the race and led 52 laps, the most of any driver.

He credited strategy and calls made by Herta for putting him in position to cycle into the lead.

Rossi's team has an alliance Andretti Motorsports and Michael Andretti, whose family has a long and at time spotty record at Indianapolis. "But I don't know how my teammate did it without stopping".

Castroneves got split on the restart by Kanaan and Newgarden, with Kanaan taking the lead in Turn 2, Newgarden passing him in Turn 3 and Kanaan getting the lead back in the next approach to Turn 1.

The 100th running of the Indy 500 means a lot to the people who love the sport. Josef Newgarden came in third, ahead of Tony Kanaan and Charlie Kimball, who finished in fourth and fifth place respectively.

A dramatic finish on the first day of qualifying led to James Hinchcliffe's even more exciting pole-winning run the next day, capping an incredible comeback at the same track where he sustained a life-threatening leg injury in May 2015. "There were moments where I was stoked, moments where we were heartbroken and moments where I was stoked again". After dominating the first half of the race, it was gratifying to know that we had enough depth to cover both the fuel economy strategy, and the max power strategy. We've been strong from day one, on Monday.

There were six past champions in the field with nine wins among them.

Alexander Rossi Wins Indianapolis 500 While Running Out Of Gas

According to ESPN, an American driver no one expected to win took the Andretti family to victory lane for the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500. Alexander Rossi overcame "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing" when he was able to stretch out his fuel just long enough to win the Indianapolis 500. Alexander Rossi ran out of gas just after he took the checkered flag. This rookie won the Indianapolis 500 on nothing more than fumes.

"I have no idea how we pulled that off," Rossi said. "It's an amazing result for Andretti Autosport."

Alexander Rossi is just the ninth rookie to win the Indianapolis 500. The last time a rookie won the Indianapolis 500 was back in 2001 when Helio Castroneves won.

"I'll cherish the fact that at one point we were 33rd," Rossi said. "We rolled the dice and came through and made it happen. This is unbelievable. I have no doubt it's going to change my life."

Rossi is a relief driver for Manor Racing in F1. He came back to the U.S. this year to drive for Bryan Herta as part of a partnership with Andretti Autosport. Herta was the owner of a winning car in 2011 with Dan Wheldon.

The Andretti family were hoping that Marco Andretti would be the one to give them their first Indianapolis 500 title since Mario Andretti won back in 1969. Marco, however, didn't contend to his four teammates including Ryan Hunter-Reay and Townsend Bell. While Alexander Rossi was technically driving for the Andretti family, he was never really a factor they considered. No one thought this rookie was going to win the race.

Alexander Rossi of the United States, driver of the #98 Andretti Herta

[Photo by Jamie Squire/Getty Images]Yahoo! Sports reports Rossi may be one of the most surprising winners of the Indianapolis 500 in the history of this race.

The car Alexander Rossi was driving literally coasted towards the yard of bricks at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Thankfully, there was not anyone around him when he came to the finish line as his vehicle was running on fumes. This strategy to stretch his fuel as far as he possibly could worked, as many of the leaders pitted for fuel. Even Carlos Munoz, who was the first to pit for fuel, finished in second place. He was a quarter-track behind the winner when Rossi finished the race.

When Rossi saw the green flag with just 33 laps left to go in the Indianapolis 500 there was a chance the 100th edition of the Indianapolis 500 was going to come down to nothing more than fuel mileage. When he was sitting in ninth place at the final restart of the race, Rossi decided to use the opportunity to take a fuel gamble.

The gamble worked. After Rossi took the checkered flag, he let his crew know he was out of gas.

For Herta, the end of the race was a bit of déjà vu as Dan Wheldon won the Indianapolis 500 back in 2011 via fuel mileage. Wheldon was able to nurse his vehicle through the finish line while running low on gas. He was able to pass J.R. Hildebrand just before crossing the finish line after Hildebrand hit a wall following the fourth turn.

While Wheldon's win was a surprise in 2011, it wasn't impossible to see him in the victory lane of the Indianapolis 500, as he had previously won back in 2005. The difference between Wheldon and Rossi is no one even factored Alexander Rossi in as a possible winner because he had never even raced in the Indianapolis 500 before. In fact, Alexander Rossi had no major-series oval experience at all.

Did you watch the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500? What do you think about rookie Alexander Rossi taking the win?

'Get well' run Sunday for SEPTA officer struck by hit-and-run driver while running

The runner who was critically injured by a hit-and-run driver in Holmesburg a week ago was a SEPTA Transit police officer for whom runners plan a four-mile "get well" outing Sunday.

Officer Gary Miller, 44, was running on Rowland Avenue, near Chippendale Street, about 3 p.m. last Sunday when a dark-colored sedan struck him from behind, throwing him up against the windshield before he landed on the road.

SEPTA Police Chief Thomas Nestel III said Saturday that Miller, who has been a transit officer for about 13 years, was in serious condition in the intensive-care unit at the Aria Health-Torresdale Campus.

Miller has undergone multiple surgeries over the last week, Nestel said, citing a variety of injuries, including to his left leg and collarbone, as well as a concussion.

"He was badly injured," the chief said.

Calling Miller "a real physical-fitness buff," Nestel said the officer was running last Sunday with his wife, as they usually did.

"He does a little more than she does," Nestel said. On lap four, when Miller was running by himself, he was hit by the car, Nestel said.

Starting at the scene of the accident, the Philadelphia runners group RUN215 will host a pop-up run beginning at 3 p.m. Sunday to wish Miller well, Nestel said. The run will conclude at Aria Health-Torresdale.

Nestel said he would meet the group at the start and then drive and meet them at the finish.

"I'm not running," he said. "This body isn't made for running."

SEPTA officers in vehicles will accompany the runners to make sure they're safe along the way, Nestel said.

At the hospital, he plans to thank the runners, and will make sure Miller or his family receive cards and other items from well-wishers.

A bulletin posted on RUN215's website Friday said the group was gathering cards and flowers to take to Miller to lift his spirits. Runners can bring cards to the starting line Sunday or drop them off at any Philadelphia Runner stores until noon Sunday. Those locations can be found at

Nestel said he was humbled by RUN215's kindness. Miller is not part of the group, Nestel said.

"Peeps who don't even know our officer are doing a Get Well Run simply because he's a fellow runner!" Nestel tweeted Saturday.

Jon Lyons, founder of RUN215, said Saturday that he didn't know Miller but was affected by what happened to him.

"I think it would be an excellent example of community to show up and let Officer Miller know we wish him the best, and are here for him when he's well enough to start running again," Lyons said.

Miller, a father of two adult children, is assigned to the district at the Frankford Transportation Center and patrolled part of the Market-Frankford Line, Nestel said.

Miller was heavily medicated and in pain when he visited him early last week, Nestel said.

"He's concerned about whether he's going to come back to duty, whether he can run again," the chief said.

Another SEPTA Transit police officer, Solomon Edwards, who is the recording secretary for the Fraternal Order of Transit Police, on Friday set up a GoFundMe page for Miller at

Nestel said the money raised would be deposited into Miller's personal account at the Police and Fire Federal Credit Union. He said the transit police union set up the donation site to raise money for expenses Miller is expected to need for his rehabilitation and physical therapy.

As of late Saturday afternoon, donations exceeded $10,000.

Philadelphia police have said the motorist who struck Miller was a white man, 20 to 30 years old, with dark hair and wearing a blue shirt. He was driving a dark-colored Saturn sedan, police said.

After the accident, the driver continued south on Rowland Avenue before turning east on Oakmont Street. Surveillance video showed the car with a shattered windshield, front-end damage, a rear spoiler, and a driver's-side front tire that is either missing a hubcap or is a spare "donut" tire, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the police tip line at 215-686-TIPS (8477) or the Accident Investigation District at 215-685-3180.
